Secondary care

Referrals to secondary care

The Improving Referrals Together Programme has been developed to empower the BHR system to work collaboratively to improve the quality of referrals into our provider services and the quality of information back to our referrers (e.g. GPs / other Consultants).

Clinicians from both BHR CCGs and BHRUT have been working together to develop ways of improving the quality of referrals to hospital. This includes referrals both from GPs and between consultants.

The aim is to ensure only appropriate referrals go to secondary care which will help to free up capacity in secondary care. It will also help to ensure patients see the right consultant, first time and with better feedback to GPs.

We’ve produced a guidance pack to act as an aide memoire for clinicians and be used an essential guide for locums and others.  In it, you will find the following:

  • Information on pathways including
    • Links to the pathways that have been developed and approved. These are essentially steps suggested by speciality consultants before making a referral and are based on NICE guidelines
    • List of pathways that are planned to be developed and when they are planned to be issued.
  • A simple guide to the relevant Speciality Single Point of Access (SPA) forms where SPAs are in place, including direct links
  • Information about sub-speciality Advice and Guidance services (both at BHRUT and at Barts Health NHS Trust)
