Musculoskeletal, spinal conditions
- Undiagnosed Musculoskeletal pain of an acute , sub-acute or chronic nature of aetiology
- Neural symptoms in the upper or lower limbs thought to be of spinal origin.
-Idiopathic decrease of spinal mobility with or without associated pain
-Neurological signs thought to be of spinal original
Whilst SMAS will screen for those signs and symptoms with serious spinal pathology (red flags) referring professionals are expected to have identified these symptoms in their intial assessments. In cases where the red flags are apparent it is expected that the patient will be referred directly to acute services.
Procedures Performed
In addition to carrying out a clinical assessment the clinicians are trained to order blood tests, MRIs, CTs, X-rays, ultrasounds and dexa scans. From these the clinicians form a clinical impression in order to develop a robust treatment plan. If appropriate onward referral to physiotherapy or secondary care Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Pain Service or Neurosurgery department via Choose and Book.
Monthly MDT with Nerosurgeon
Direct Onward referral to Neurosurgery
Exclusions
Patient under 16.
Patients who already have a diagnosis.
Patients who require physiotherapy (should be referred directly to Out Patient Physiotherapy).
Red flag symptoms
Patients who are house bound and cannot travel to clinic for assessment

The spinal and Musculoskeletal Assessment (SMAS) provides expert assessment and management of Musculoskeletal conditions. It is an extended scope Practitioner Physiotherapy led service for patients with Havering GPs.
